Nine Southeast Missouri State University athletes have been awarded 1999-2000 Ohio Valley Conference Medals of Honor, given annually to the student-athlete who achieves the highest grade-point average in a conference-sponsored sport.
Of the 60 athletes who earned medals, 59 achieved perfect 4.0 GPA's. Morehead State led the OVC with 15 Medal of Honor winners while Southeast was second with nine.
Of the nine Southeast athletes winning Medals of Honor, seven were members of the women's track and field team: Amy Arteme, Katie Gilbert, Tobi Raney, Becky Shull, Jessie Thompson, Laura Van Hoevelaak and Tammy Wenkel. Arteme, Thompson, Van Hoevelaak and Wenkel also ran cross country.
Also honored were Jackie (Derwort) Haines (volleyball) and Greg Patterson (men's golf).
All the honored athletes for Southeast had a 4.0 GPA for the 1999-2000 school year.
Southeast also claimed 92 places on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll that includes all athletes with a 3.25 or higher GPA. The list of those honorees appears in Scoreboard on this page.
