• LaMar Owen had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Stetson Hairston added 15 Friday night as Southern Illinois topped Vanderbilt 67-53 in the third round of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational at Valley High School.

Darren Brooks added 11 for Southern Illinois (3-0), and the Salukis shot 71 percent from the field in the second half in opening the season with a third straight win.

Vanderbilt (3-1) only trailed 48-41 with 10:23 to play, but Southern Illinois went on a 9-0 run, sparked by five straight points from Hairston in pulling away.

Football

• Veteran guard Ruben Brown will undergo neck surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Brown, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection who started 136 games for the Buffalo Bills from 1995-2003 season, signed with the Bears as a free agent. He missed Thursday's loss to the Cowboys because of the injury.

Olympics

• Bulgaria's top Olympic official faces expulsion from the IOC for unethical conduct.

The International Olympic Committee executive board recommended Friday that Ivan Slavkov be ousted for violating ethics rules and "seriously tarnishing" the organization's image. Slavkov has been suspended from the IOC since Aug. 7 after being implicated in a BBC television investigation into alleged corruption in the bid city process.

A final decision goes to the full IOC general assembly, which meets in July in Singapore. A two-thirds vote of the 100-plus members is required for expulsion.

Slavkov was secretly filmed by an undercover crew discussing how votes could be bought in the race for the 2012 Summer Olympics. He contends he knew it was a setup and played along to expose what he thought was a real attempt to corrupt the process.

The 64-year-old Slavkov, an IOC member since 1987, is taking legal action against the BBC for using "illegal means of surveillance."
