CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Bill Schmitz was named head football coach at Austin Peay State University Tuesday.
Schmitz has been head coach at the Division III U.S. Coast Guard Academy for the past four seasons, earning a 20-19 record. The Bears went 8-2 in 1996 and won their first Freedom Football Conference title.
Austin Peay announced in December that it would no longer have a scholarship football program. And Roy Gregory, coach for six years, took a job as the athletic department's director of marketing and promotions.
The Governors hadn't had a winning season since 1984 and won only 17 games since 1990. Last year, they were 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference in 1996.
