Delta's girls basketball team could not handle Scott County Central's press in the first quarter and could not recover from an early hole, and the Bravettes went on to win 63-53 in a Class 1 sectional game Tuesday night at Sikeston High School.

Scott County improved to 14-9 and will play in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at the West Plains Civic Center. Delta finished its season at 19-6.

Delta got on the board first with a Shea Smith 3-pointer, but that would be one of the few highlights through the first three quarters. Scott County Central's press caused turnover after turnover, and the Bobcats could simply not get in sync.

Scott County freshman guard Brittany Peet scored six straight points to give the Bravettes an 8-3 lead. Scott County continued to pour it on and went up 23-10 after one quarter.

"The girls have really worked hard on the press," Scott County coach Semona Penrod said.

After having its way with Scott County during the regular season, Delta simply had no answer for the Bravettes' press. Scott County opened the second quarter with a 14-3 run and built a 41-18 halftime lead.

"They did something that they hadn't done in the other ballgames," Delta coach Randy White said of the press. "We didn't respond to it the way we're capable of."

Scott County continued to cruise in the third quarter, going up by as many as 29 points. But with the Bravettes only going five deep, Delta finally began to make a move in the fourth quarter.

Delta started the quarter with a 9-0 run, and after a Scott County basket, Delta reeled off 10 straight points. Delta lost too much time late trying to foul and simply ran out of time.

"The kids played hard, and I'm darn proud of them for that," White said. "I hope we learned playing hard is an important thing, but we also have to stay composed so we can execute."

Janet Penrod led Scott County with 21 points, Jennifer Hoots scored 18, Peet had 12 and Brittany Godwin added 10.

Delta got 25 points from Smith and Sarah Cook finished with 11.
