Braves fall into tie for first with Phils

MIAMI -- Ken Caminiti grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded and Atlanta lost to the Florida Marlins 1-0 Monday night, dropping the Braves into a tie with Philadelphia for first place in the NL East.

The Marlins scored in the second inning on catcher Javy Lopez's throwing error. Brad Penny and two Florida relievers made it stand up, blunting the Braves' bid for a second straight ninth-inning comeback.

The Phillies, who were idle, and the Braves each have 12 games remaining, including three against each other next week in Atlanta.

New York pulled within four games of the division leaders.

With one out in the Braves' ninth, Julio Franco reached on shortstop Andy Fox's error. Chipper Jones followed with a single and Brian Jordan was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.

Antonio Alfonseca then got Caminiti to hit a grounder to third baseman Mike Lowell, who stepped on the bag and threw to first for the double play.

PIRATES 7, CUBS 6

PITTSBURGH -- Gary Matthews Jr., waived by Chicago last month, hit a tiebreaking homer off Scott Chiasson (0-1) in the eighth inning and Pittsburgh rallied from five runs down for the win.

It was the second tough loss for the Cubs in as many games, and came after Kerry Wood squandered a 5-0 lead in the sixth inning. The day before, the Cubs wasted Sammy Sosa's three homers in a 7-6 loss at Houston.

The Cubs stayed 3 1/2 games behind St. Louis with 12 games to play in the NL wild card race but missed a big opportunity to pick up a game on the Cardinals.

Mike Lincoln (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory.
