PITTSBURGH -- Barry Bonds hit his 597th career homer and just missed another while driving in four runs, leading the San Francisco Giants past the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-6 Saturday.
Bonds moved within three homers of becoming the fourth major leaguer with 600 homers, connecting off Kip Wells (10-9) to put the Giants up 5-0 in the second.
The drive was his 30th -- and 103rd in two seasons -- and extended his NL record streak to 11 consecutive seasons with 30 or more homers. Jimmie Foxx holds the major league record of 12 from 1929-40.
His next time up, Bonds was convinced he had homered again, dropping his bat and standing in the batter's box to watch his long drive to right-center in the fourth.
