It wasn't a shock to me when I heard the initial announcement of baseball's "Spider-Man 2" plan for the base paths. In fact, my first reaction was, "That's a good idea. Why didn't I think of that?"

I have tremendous respect for the game of baseball, and I always will because, after all, it's our national pastime. But I also understand that this is a different world and a different market from 10 to 20 years ago.

Likewise, I was not surprised when MLB rescinded the deal with the base paths. Instead I was shocked about how quickly it was reversed. All fans can take part in an autograph session before the Memphis Redbirds game. If you don't have an autograph book, just get to the park early and you could be one of 1,500 fans to receive a free one. Or you could just do what I do and take your own baseball. Gates open at 6 for a 7 p.m. game with the Portland Beavers.

Friday

The first 25,000 fans entering Busch Stadium who are 21 and over will receive a free T-shirt to kick off a three-game set against the defending World Champions Florida Marlins at 7 p.m.

Saturday

I don't know about you, but all this talk about the NFL draft and free agency has me ready for some football. Here's our chance: Memphis Explorers vs. Arkansas at 8 p.m. Sure, it's just Arena League, and the Afl2 at that, but football is football.
