Blues storm Blues late, win in OT

ST. LOUIS -- Doug Weight scored with 41 seconds left in overtime, lifting the Blues to a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night after Keith Tkachuk tied it with 29 seconds left in regulation.

Weight hit a shot from the faceoff circle, giving the Blues their fifth consecutive home victory.

The Blues pulled goalie Chris Osgood with 55 seconds remaining. Tkachuk was parked in front of the net when the rebound of a shot by Scott Mellanby came right to him. Tkachuk put the puck back past goalie Felix Potvin in for his 11th goal.

This was the only meeting between the two first-place clubs this season. In their lone meeting last season in Boston, the Blues won 4-0. Boston has won just once in its last 11 meetings with St. Louis. The Blues have won the last five meetings.

The Bruins, trailing 2-1 after two periods, scored twice in the third. Nick Boynton beat Mellanby to a rebound of a shot by Mike Knuble at the 9:50 mark. The puck was loose in the slot and Boynton knocked it past Osgood for his first goal this season.

The Bruins tied it 2-2 when Joe Thornton scored at 1:20. Thorton's wrist shot from the top of the slot clanged off the crossbar and went in for his fourth goal to go along with 18 assists.

Boston took advantage of an errant pass to take a 1-0 lead in the second period. Osgood attempted to clear the puck but he mistakenly passed it to Bruins right winger Martin Lapointe, who scored unassisted.

The Blues came right back and scored twice in the period, outshooting Boston 13-5. The Bruins, ranked last in the league in penalty killing, blanked St. Louis on two power-play opportunities.

Pavol Demitra scored his eighth goal just 2:38 after Lapointe scored to tie it 1-all. Alexander Khavanov passed the puck in from the point and Demitra beat Potvin to hike his scoring streak to eight games.

Rookie Mark Rycroft scored his first career goal to give the Blues a 2-1 lead. Dallas Drake fed Rycroft, who was at the top of the slot. Rycroft banged home the slap shot to score after 28 games with the Blues.

A goal was taken away from Demitra with 4:49 remaining when it was ruled he directed the puck into the net with a high stick.

Notes: St. Louis is 7-1 at home this season, its best start since 2000-2001 when the Blues started 6-0-1 at home. ... Boston's P. J. Axelsson is one assist shy of 100 in his career. ... Boston is 8-1-1 against Western Conference teams this season.
