PARIS, Tenn. -- The Cape Girardeau Best Mortgage Junior American Legion baseball squad won its first four games in the 20-team Paris (Tenn.) Tournament as it heads into today's final round with its sights set on the championship.

Friday, Cape (31-7) slipped past Jackson (Tenn.) 6-5. The squad then won three games Saturday, beating Eagles Landing (Ga.) 5-1, Horne Lake (Miss.) 11-3 and Murray (Ky.) 9-2.

"We're playing pretty well and hopefully we can keep it up," said Cape manager Matt Welker. "It's a big tournament and we'll have to win three more games (today) to win the title."

Matt Wulfers was the winning pitcher against Jackson. Cape had 14 hits, led by Seth Hudson with three. Chris Conrad, Aaron Dohogne, Chris Daniel and Blake Urhahn all added two hits.

John Thies hurled a two-hitter against Eagles Landing. Cape, which had five hits, got two runs batted in from Daniel.

Hudson notched the victory against Horne Lake. Dustin Tatum and Clay Schermann both had two of Cape's eight hits.

Daniel was the winner against Murray. Cape had eight hits, no player getting more than one.

Stoddard Co. 4

DEXTER, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Senior Legion exploded past Stoddard County in the opener and was up 16-0 in the sixth inning of the nightcap when the Southeast Missourian went to press.

Zac Fidler went 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double and six runs batted in. Shane Kistner, Tyler Schlosser and Justin Welker all had three hits, while Timmy Wencewicz provided a home run.

Luke Johnson was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out four.

Ford & Sons improved to 11-10 overall and 7-4 in District 14 play with the win in the first game.

Cape will return to action Monday when Chaffee visits Capaha Field for a 6 p.m. District 14 doubleheader. Ford & Sons will also have a home district doubleheader Wednesday as Poplar Bluff comes to town for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Riverdogs split

with Saline Co.

Friday night, the Cape Riverdogs dropped the first game of a doubleheader 8-0, but managed to beat Saline Co. (Ill.) 4-3 on just four hits in the nightcap to manage a split.

The Riverdogs won the second game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Josh Hulsey drew a two-out walk, then advanced to second and third base on wild pitches.

Josh West then delivered a crisp single to win the game. West went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Steve Fowler picked up the win in relief. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Keith Heuring started and went five innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, on five hits and two walks. He struck out four.

In the first game, Michael Minner took the loss. He went six innings and allowed eight runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks. He struck out two.
