BERNIE -- Notre Dame High's volleyball team gave three-time defending state champion Bernie quite a battle Tuesday before falling just short.

Bernie, which won the Class 2A title last year after winning 1A crowns the previous two seasons, squeezed out a 13-15, 16-14, 15-8 win on its home court.

"It was a real good match," said Notre Dame coach Janet Buchheit, whose squad fell to 2-1. "We played well."

Jennifer Glueck had seven kills for Notre Dame while Kelli Canfield added five.

Notre Dame's JV suffered a 15-3, 15-0 defeat.

The Lady Bulldogs host Ste. Genevieve tonight.

SEMO Conference Tournament

SIKESTON -- Top-seeded Jackson rolled past No. 8 Caruthersville 15-6, 15-11 Tuesday as the SEMO Conference volleyball tournament got under way here.

Andrea Koeper had eight kills and two aces for the Lady Indians, who are now 2-1. Jennifer Ellis had 11 assists while Heather Brown contributed seven assists and five digs. Becky King added five kills and Valerie Jansen had six digs.

"We played a good match," said Jackson coach Nancy Ellis.

The tournament's second seed, Poplar Bluff, also won in two games by downing No. 7 Chaffee. No information was received on the other two matches pitting No. 3 Sikeston against No. 6 Scott City and No. 4 New Madrid County Central against No. 5 Cape Girardeau Central.

Semifinal action will take place at 4 p.m. and 5:15 today, with the third-place match set for 6:30 and the championship to be decided at 7:45.

Woodland Tournament

MARBLE HILL -- Top-seeded Leopold and No. 4 Zalma posted victories Tuesday as the opening round of the Woodland Tournament wrapped up.

Leopold beat No. 8 Greenville 15-8, 15-1 and Zalma downed No. 5 Advance 15-13, 15-10 as they joined No. 2 Woodland and No. 3 Meadow Heights in the semifinals.

Also Tuesday, in consolation action, Bloomfield beat Puxico 15-8, 16-14.

Action will resume Thursday. The semifinals pit Leopold against Zalma at 7 p.m. and Woodland against Meadow Heights at 8.

Perryville 15-8-15

Farmington 12-15-13

FARMINGTON -- Perryville evened its record at 2-2 by winning a tight match Tuesday.

Jamie Mueller had 12 points and nine digs while Laura Ernst had 11 kills. Jeni Blevins added 10 digs and Amy Verseman had 10 assists.

Perryville's JV lost 15-5, 16-14.

St. Vincent 15-15

Oak Ridge 3-7

OAK RIDGE -- St. Vincent kept Oak Ridge winless with a two-set victory Tuesday.

The Squaws (2-1) were led in kills by Jessica Lakeman with eight and Fara Galati with six. Debbie Welker contributed 20 assists.

Oak Ridge fell to 0-3 with the loss.

In JV play, St. Vincent won 14-16, 15-1, 15-10.

Notre Dame will visit Oak Ridge Thursday while St. Vincent visits Ste. Genevieve.

BOYS SOCCER

Jackson 5, Poplar Bluff 2

POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson's Nathan Windeknecht recorded a hat trick Tuesday to improve the Indians to 2-2-1.

Windeknecht scored the first goal of the game within minutes of the start and added two more scores in the second half. The Indians led 2-1 at the half.

Chris Schuette and Brandon Blattel had Jackson's other goals. Schuette scored on a header off a corner kick to give Jackson a 4-1 lead.

Jackson host Carbondale, Ill., Friday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jackson 8, Sikeston 1

SIKESTON -- Jackson's girl's tennis team continued to roll past its competition, improving to 5-0 Tuesday.

"We're playing really well," said Jackson coach Linda Adams. "We're playing well as a team and I'm proud of that."

The Lady Indians lost only one match and in their eight match wins never allowed Sikeston to win more than three games.

Jackson's JV won 7-3. The Lady Indians host Charleston Thursday.
