Defending Class 1A state champion Bernie kept the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs in search of their first win of the young season with a 15-7, 15-5 victory Tuesday night in high school volleyball action.
Notre Dame fell to 0-2 with the loss.
"We just played pretty flat," said Notre Dame coach Janet Buchheit. "We came out and just didn't play our game."
Buchheit said her squad was able to hang with Bernie for a while in each game before seeing the Lady Mules pull away.
"We never seemed to make the big play," said Buchheit. "They had stronger hitters and were able to put the ball away a little more often than we were."
Bernie also won the JV match in straight sets.
Notre Dame will host Oak Ridge on Thursday.
St. Vincent 15-15, Oak Ridge 13-8
PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent of Perryville claimed its first win of the season with a sweep of Oak Ridge.
Becky Lorenz of St. Vincent (1-1) led the scoring with 12 service points and five kills. Fara Galati turned in eight blocks and four kills while Becky Prost had seven blocks and three kills. Debbie Welker added 14 assists.
St. Vincent won the JV match 15-11, 15-7.
St. Vincent will host Ste. Genevieve on Thursday.
Farmington 15-15, Perryville 6-12
PERRYVILLE -- Perryville suffered its first loss of the season as visiting Farmington prevailed Tuesday night.
The Lady Pirates (2-1) got eight points and 12 assists from Erin Blevins. Jaclyn Schremp led the way in kills with 11 while Laura Ernst added six. Dana Seibel contributed 12 assists.
Perryville's JV won 15-5, 11-15, 15-5.
Woodland Tournament
MARBLE HILL -- The Lady Cardinals advanced to the semifinals of their own Woodland Tournament Tuesday night with a straight-set victory over Advance.
Woodland, the third seed, dispatched of No. 6 Advance 15-6, 15-10.
Lisa Mesey led the attack with 17 kills while Leanna Lukefahr added five. Tonya Atchison recorded 23 assists.
In Tuesday's consolation play, No. 4 Bloomfield defeated No. 8 Oran 15-5, 15-7.
Woodland (3-0) will face No. 2 Leopold in Thursday's 8 p.m. semifinal. Top-seeded Meadow Heights and No. 5 Zalma will meet in the other semifinal at 7. The finals will be Friday night.
SEMO Conference Tournament
CARUTHERSVILLE -- Top-seeded Jackson breezed through the opening round of the SEMO Conference Tournament with a 15-2, 15-6 victory over No. 8 Chaffee Tuesday night.
Jackson (3-0) got strong defensive play and serving from Becky Stoverink, 16 digs and four aces, and Valerie Jansen, nine digs and three aces.
"We did a very good job on defense," said Jackson coach Nancy Ellis. "We need to do a little bit better job of hitting and getting our kill percentage up. Overall we did a good job."
Jackson will face the Poplar Bluff-New Madrid winner today in the semifinals at 5:15 p.m.
Softball
Cape Central 10, Shawnee 0
WOLF LAKE, Ill. -- Cape Girardeau Central evened its record at 4-4 by routing host Shawnee in five innings Tuesday.
Tori McIntyre notched the victory.
Central had 13 hits, led by Nichole Thiele with two hits, including a home run. McIntyre, Abby Harris and Sara Bruening all added two hits.
The Lady Tigers visit Poplar Bluff today.
Jackson 11, Poplar Bluff 1
JACKSON -- Jackson's Lady Indians pounded out 14 hits as they improved to 7-3 by ripping visiting Poplar Bluff in five innings Tuesday.
Christy Peets was the winning pitcher, scattering seven hits.
Mindy Myers led the offense with three hits. Dana Eakins, Alisha Liley, Kristen Woods, Dana Sander and Jackie Langford all had two hits.
The Lady Indians play at St. Louis Notre Dame today.
Kelly 16-14, East Prairie 1-1
BENTON -- Kelly posted a pair of five-inning victories Tuesday in boosting its season record to 4-1.
Kim Riley held East Prairie to two hits in the opener while Brittany Lambert fired a four-hitter in the nightcap.
Jennifer McNiel collected six RBIs, including a grand slam, and accounted for two of Kelly's 10 hits in the opener. Ashlie Beggs added a home run while Natalie Robert had three hits and two RBI and Riley had two hits.
Beggs had two doubles in the second game. Lindsey Burger had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI. Julie Milan also tripled and had three RBI.
Kelly visits Perryville Thursday.

Cape Central 5, Charleston 3
CHARLESTON -- Charleston's 34-match winning streak was snapped Tuesday as visiting Cape Girardeau squeezed out a 5-3 victory.
"It was a really close match," said Central coach Annette Slattery, whose squad is now 2-0 in duals. "It could have gone either way."

JACKSON -- Garret Finks netted two goals as Jackson defeated Poplar Bluff Tuesday.
Jackson (3-2) tallied three of its goals in the first half. Nathan Windeknecht netted the first goal on an assist from Dane McLard. Derrick Johnston then scored off a pass from Brandon Blattle, before Fink scored his first goal with an assist to Dee Jones. Fink netted Jackson's final goal on a direct kick in the second half.
Jackson won the JV match 1-0.
