Tory Meyr
School: Jackson
Sport: Basketball
Coach: Steve Burk
Week Report: Meyr scored a season-high 27 points against district foe Farmington to avenge a loss to the Knights earlier this season. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard also scored 19 points -- including a free throw with six seconds left -- against Charleston in a 62-61 victory. Charleston had also beaten Jackson earlier this season.
Season Report: Meyr, a Class 5A second-team all-state wide receiver, is among the top scorers in Southeast Missouri, averaging about 17 points per contest. The senior also averages 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals, while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range, 48 percent from 2-point range and 71 percent from the free-throw line. All that while playing on a bad ankle that may require surgery this summer.
Coach's Comments: "I think one of his greatest attributes is his toughness," Burk said. "He's not afraid to take the contact. He hits a lot of tough shots -- shots that for some wouldn't be a good shot. He's used his toughness and quickness to become a very good offensive player and he's a good defensive player as well. He sees the floor and understands the game very well. Not only is he an outstanding athlete, but an outstanding student. And he's a leader in school as well."
