Mario Whitney
School: Jackson
Sport: Track
Coach: Bob Sink
Weekly Report: It has been well documented: Whitney is fast. But once-every-45-years fast? Whitney broke meet and Jackson High School records in the 100 and 200 meter runs this past week at the 13-team Murphysboro Invitational. His 200 time of 22.25 broke a school record that hadn't been touched since 1955. His 10.58 time in the 100 broke the old Jackson record by .07 seconds. Though the times were hand-timed, Sink said Whitney was not aided by the wind. A 10.58 time in the 100 would've won state last year, but electronic times tend to be a tad slower.
Season Report: Whitney, who turned heads with his speed as a running back this past football season, has yet to lose in the 100 or 200 meter dashes in three meets this year.
Coach's Comments: "He's got a special gift," said Sink. "I'm trying to think of when I've coached a sprinter with his God-given ability -- maybe when I was down in Arkansas early in my career. He has a legitimate shot at doing well at state but a lot of things come into play at state like being mentally and physically ready. Right now, his 100 time is more impressive but don't be surprised when he runs a 21-something in the 200. I think eventually the best race for him will be a 400 because of his strength. His strength is better mainly because of coach Brandon Norman and his physical fitness class. Mario has made some tremendous gains. He's been hitting the weights hard and Mario is in better shape now than he was in football season because of his strength. His work ethic has been very good. It was good in the offseason and at track practice."
