Southeast Missouri State finished third in the 2004-2005 Ohio Valley Conference Institutional Academic Achievement Award, which goes to the OVC school with the greatest percentage of its athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll for that academic year.

To be on the honor role, athletes must have at least a 3.25 grade point average. Morehead State finished first, with Tennessee-Martin second.

Southeast also won a league-high four of the 17 OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards, which are presented annually to the school's team with the greatest percentage of its student-athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Southeast was first in men's cross country, women's cross country, women's soccer and women's track and field.

Also announced by the OVC Thursday were 101 OVC Medal of Honor winners, given annually to athletes who achieve the highest GPA in their sport. All 101 had a perfect 4.0 GPA. Southeast had 22 of the 101.

Victorie Torrez, Melissa VanVelkinburgh (softball); Puja Paul, Kim Roberts (women's tennis); Jennifer Burke, Michele Jett, Kim Krieger, Sarah Verelst, Heather West, Brooke Woodruff, Emily Zimmermann (women's track and field).

Washers tournament set

A washers tournament to benefit the Cape Girardeau American Legion will be held the next two Saturdays at 1 p.m. at the SEMO District Fair at Arena Park.

The entry fee is $10 per team, with cash prizes and other prizes being awarded.
