Southeast soccer team upsets Kentucky 2-1
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team picked up a big victory Thursday night as the Otahkians defeated Kentucky 2-1.
The Otahkians improved to 5-2 while the Wildcats, ranked 19th nationally earlier this season, fell to 4-3.
All the scoring came in the opening half, with the Otahkians getting the game's first two goals.
Ashley DeRoy opened the scoring, with an assist from Heather Reding, 16:51 into the contest. A little less than four minutes later, at the 20:20 mark, Erin Slattery made it 2-0, with an assist from Valerie Henderson.
Kentucky's Erin Witchey scored at the 25:41 mark, but Southeast was able to hold off the Wildcats the rest of the way.
Southeast goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro made six saves in the second half after Amanda Wrzos played the first half. Kentucky held an overall 12-3 edge in shots.
The Otahkians return to action Sunday when Oral Roberts (2-3) visits Houck Stadium for a 2 p.m. game.
Cross country team heads to Vanderbilt
Southeast's cross country teams will compete in Saturday's Commodore Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
Both Southeast squads took part in last weekend's Missouri Challenge in Columbia.
Kris Woolf led the Southeast women at Missouri by placing 12th in a time of 18:51.3 over the 5K course. Jen Burke was 15th (18:55.98).
Southeast's men were led at Missouri by Chad Sierman, who placed 17th.
