Southeast volleyball beats Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball team evened its record at 4-4 with a 30-28, 30-15, 23-30, 30-25 win over Southern Illinois Tuesday night.

Sarah Frost powered 24 kills for the Otahkians while Bobbi Carlile added 18. Suzanne Gundlach led the way in digs with 24, followed by Carlile with 16 and Emily Johnson with 12. Emily Scannell dished out 56 assists and Jessica Houpt had seven blocks.

The Salukis (6-2) got 16 kills from Kristie Kemner.

Eastern Illinois wins Southeast golf event

Eastern Illinois came from behind Tuesday to win the 12-team Morton B. Harris Intercollegiate golf tournament at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Only three strokes separated the top three teams. Eastern Illinois, in third place and two shots off the pace after Monday's opening 36 holes, shot a 4-over-par 284 in Tuesday's final 18 holes to finish at 12-over 852.

Saint Louis, the 36-hole leader, wound up at 853 and host Southeast, in second place after Monday, was another shot back at 854. The Billikens and Indians both shot 287 Tuesday.

Saint Louis had the top two individual finishers. Evan Frederick was first at 4-under 210 while Adam Trower placed second 208.

Southeast's Woody Hill was third (209) and the Indians' Matt Hillis tied for fifth (210).

Southeast baseball to hold fantasy camp

Southeast's baseball program will hold its second annual fantasy camp Sept. 23-26 from 5-8 p.m. each day at Capaha Field.

The event, put on by Southeast's baseball coaching staff and designed to raise money for the Indians' program, is for players age 30 and over.

Instructional practices, including batting, fielding and bullpen work, will be held Sept. 23-25. An official nine-inning game will be held Sept. 26.

Player will be provided with official uniforms and practice gear. The cost is $220 per player (30 players maximum). A $100 deposit and registration is due by Sept. 16.

Central football team ranked in state poll

Cape Girardeau Central High School is ranked fifth in Class 4 during the first state football poll of the season.

Sikeston is ranked 10th in Class 4. The only other ranked Southeast Missouri team is Hayti, which is fifth in Class 1.

Elftink, Beussink finish first in horseshoe event

Tyler Elfrink and Brian Beussink finished first in Sunday's Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event at the Oran Knights of Columbus Hall.

Ron LeGrand and Keith Trankler were second while Doris Stubenrauch and Karen Jansen placed third.

In other horseshoe competition, Martin Williams and Danny Williams were first at the Bell City Community Day picnic. Marcus Schaefer and Terrih Rose finished second while Larry Glastetter and George Moit placed third.
