Seys, Burford win in SEMO Horseshoe Association event

Perry Seys and Larry Burford won Sunday's event for the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold.

Carl Reddick and Dan Elfrink were second. Third was Virgil Schreckenberg and Darlene Stoverink.

Southeast Sundancers earn spot in nationals

The Southeast Missouri State University Sundancers won two trophies and a spot in the 2003 National Dance Alliance Collegiate Dance Team Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Besides winning the camp spirit stick at an NDA competition and camp in Kansas in late July, the Sundancers also won the Most Spirited Team trophy. They finished second with a superior rating in the style routine competition.

For the second year, Southeast sophomore Chela Rutlin won the Top Gun award for outstanding dancer in the funk style category. For the third year, Heather Cook was chosen for the NDA Collegiate All-American Team.

Dunklin County opens Legion tournament today

Dunklin County will play Springfield Hillcrest at 5:30 p.m. today as the four-team American Legion State Tournament begins in Columbia.

Also today, Kirksville plays Sedalia at 8:30 p.m. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Payne leads Dowell in Sikeston super pro class

Mark Payne of Steelville, Mo., had a 6.24-second run (109 mph) with a reaction time of 0.519 to win the super pro division Saturday at the Sikeston Drag Strip. Chris Dowell of Troy, Mo., was second with a time of 6.19 seconds (109 mph).

Bear Nichlols of LaCenter, Ky., won in the pro class in 7.19 seconds (93 mph). Steve Jones of Sikeston was second in 6.9 seconds (97 mph).

In the ET class, Stanley Byrd took the win in 8.85 seconds (77 mph). Jeff Hays of Herrin, Ill., was second in 8.28 seconds (83 mph).
