Kennedy to compete at world games
Jill Kennedy, a paralympic track and field athlete originally from Zalma and now living in Charlottesville, Va., will be a member of the U.S. team for the IPC Athletics World Championships, scheduled for Sept. 3 through 10 in Assen, The Netherlands.
Kennedy has won international awards in dwarf-only competition in the shot put, discus and javelin.
She won national championships in the discus and shot put early in July in Atlanta.
She is a two-time Paralympic Games participant, competing as a powerlifter in 2000 in Australia and winning two bronze medals in field events in 2004 in Greece.
Taylor Bowman of Cape Girardeau posted a first-place finish Saturday night in the junior dragster class at the Sikeston Drag Strip.
Bowman had an elapsed time of 7.579 seconds and an average speed of 86.67 miles per hour.
Nathan Revelle of Patton placed second in the trophy class competition. Revelle, listed as "a relative newcomer" in the track's news release, had an elapsed time of 10.214 seconds and an average speed of 68.39 mph.
Rob Sample of Scott City finished second in the super pro class. He had an elapsed time of 5.047 seconds and an average speed of 138.03 mph.
Bell City High School students Nick Niemczyk and Melvin Johnson are members of the Stoddard County 15-year-old Junior Babe Ruth baseball team that won the state tournament over the weekend in Cassville, Mo.
Niemczyk pitched a pair of victories for Stoddard County, which begins play Friday in the regional tournament in Boonville, Mo.
Jack Evans of Scott City scored a hole in one July 28 on the 12th hole at Kimbeland Country Club in Jackson.
He used a 7-iron to ace the 150-yard, par-3 hole.
For Evans, the ace was the fourth of his career.
Witnesses were Jesse Eaker, David Thompson and Bill Clark.
Gary Hellwege of Cape Girardeau recorded an ace at the MSH Auxiliary of Dexter's fifth annual three-person scramble at Hidden Trails in Dexter, Mo.
The event -- the Dr. Ron Hill Classic -- is played in honor of Hellwege's uncle and took place July 8 and 9 this year.
He aced the par-3 fourth hole with a 7-iron. The witnesses included his teammates, Cliff Verhines and Jeff Rosanswank.
The event raises money for those with interest in going into the medical field.
A meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday for the parents of those students interested in trying out for the Central boys soccer team. The meeting will take place in the commons area at Central High School. Parents should bring completed physical examination forms and proof of insurance.
Tryouts for freshmen and sophomores will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday at Central, and juniors and seniors will practice at 7 a.m. Night practices will also be held on those days from 6 to 8.
The Cape Area Youth Soccer Association coaches meeting originally scheduled for Monday has been moved to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The meeting will take place at the Drury Lodge. Those who plan on coaching a team should attend or send an assistant coach.
