Morris sweeps honors at flag tournament

Kathy Morris won medalist honors and placed first in the play of the day Thursday in Cape Girardeau Country Club's ladies day action.

The play of the day was flag tournament.

Morris was followed in order by Mary Ann Vogelsang, Judy Holcomb, Luanne Kiefner and Catharine Weed.

* In twilight golf on Tuesday, the team of Joyce Kuntze, E.R. Fischer and Marcia Wagner finished first with Morris, Ben Rickard and Lisa Bjelich placing second.

Southeast fall baseball registration this weekend

The Southeast Missouri Fall Baseball League will have registration 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in the center court at West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau.

The league is open for ages 8 to 18. Registration fees are $40 for the 8- and 9-year-old and 10- and 11-year old age groups, $45 for the 12 to 14 age group and $55 for the 15 to 18 age group.

The league, formed in 1997, has grown from 48 players in one age group to more than 300 players from throughout the region.

The season consists of eight to 10 games and is followed by a tournament. Games begin Sept. 2 and the season will continue through October.

Rose places in two horseshoes events

Terri Rose was part of a third-place team Saturday and a second-place team Sunday in Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association action.

Rose partnered with Tori Vandeven for a third-place finish at the Backyard Horseshoe Club in Glenallen.

Lachelle Cook and Mike Mosse placed first in that 10-team event with Mike DeVault and Virgil Schreckenberg finishing second.

On Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oran, Rose and Cori Stoverink finished second to Jake Kluesner and Brent Prindle. Kory Kluesner and Edgar Stoverink finished third. The field included 26 two-person teams, which are selected randomly for each stop on the association's tour.

Today marks the start of the three-day Missouri Knights of Columbus state tournament in Leopold. The event is expected to draw more than 1,000 horseshoe pitchers.

The SEMO Horseshoe Association returns to action 1 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Oran J.C. Fall Festival and 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Knights of Columbus in Jackson.
