Scorpion Rugby Club second in tournament

The Kohlfeld Scorpion Rugby Club opened its fall season last weekend by finishing second in the Columbia 10s Tournament in Columbia, Mo.

After beating the Columbia Outlaws 22-0 and the St. Louis Hornets 12-7, the Scorpions lost to Truman State 25-0 in the finals.

Scorers in the eight-team tournament for the Scorpions included Richard Fricke, Marc Harris, Jamie Hann, Walter Denton, T.J. Ebner and Jeremy Mabrey.

The Scorpions' next game is Aug. 31 at the St. Louis Hornets. Their first home game is Sept. 21 against the St. Louis Royals in Arena Park on Hawthorne Road.

The Scorpions practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. in Arena Park. Anyone interested in playing is welcome to attend practice or to call team captain Joey Hann at 334-6657 for more information.

New Hamburg prevails at 16-under World Series

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The New Hamburg Heat, a local fast-pitch girls softball team, defeated Washington Township (N.J.) 7-1 Tuesday as pool play ended at the 16-under Babe Ruth Softball World Series.

Dana Essner pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and no walks. She struck out two.

The Heat had just five hits but took advantage of five errors as all seven runs were unearned. Kelly Essner led New Hamburg with three hits and two RBIs.

New Hamburg went 2-2 in pool play during the 10-team tournament and qualified for the six-team double-elimination playoff bracket that begins today. The Heat will play Port Angeles (Wash.).

Heartland Nationals win at 12-under World Series

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Heartland Nationals, a local fast-pitch girls softball team, routed Okolona 16-0 in four innings Tuesday to improve to 3-1 in pool play at the 12-under Babe Ruth Softball World Series.

Sarah Benton pitched three innings for the win, allowing one hit. He struck out two and walked two. Kalie Hughes hurled a perfect final inning, with two strikeouts.

The Nationals had 11 hits. Rachel Hendrix led the way with three hits, including a home run, and six RBIs. Hannah Glueck and Kristain Burger both added two hits.

LeGrand, Vandeven are among horseshoe winners

Ron Le Grand and Irv Vandeven won Sunday's event for the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association at the Backyard Horseshoe Club in Glenallen.

Cori Stoverink and Melody Williams were second. Larry Burford and Kevin Schlimme were third.

At Kelso on Saturday, Rose Kern and Bob Burnett won in a 14-team event. Jeff Miller and Kelly Stause were second, with Cori Stoverink and Terrie Rose third.
