Southeast soccer opens Canada tour with loss

Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team lost 3-1 to the Australian Under-19 National Team Thursday in the first game of the Otahkians' 11-day tour of Canada.

Lisa Schweppe scored the Otahkians' only goal, with an assist from Michelle Frossard.

"It was a very close game. The team fought hard and goalie Beth Guccione was outstanding," Southeast coach Heather Nelson said. "Beth was so amazing that toward the end of the game the Australian team was even clapping for her."

The Otahkians play the women's national champion Burnaby Canadians at 1:00 p.m. today.

"The Burnaby Canadians are a top team and will be a challenge," said Nelson.

Southeast football to hold annual women's clinic

Southeast Missouri State University's football coaching staff will host its third annual women's football clinic at 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Show Me Center.

The event, which includes free admission, refreshments, door prizes and beginner and advanced sessions, will follow the annual Booster Club Barbecue that begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

Dunklin County wins twice in Legion state tournament

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Dunklin County, bouncing back from a first-round loss, won two elimination games Friday to advance to the championship round of the America Legion State Tournament.

First, Dunklin County scored 12 runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Sedalia 20-10, then the Bootheel squad beat Kirksville 5-2 in the loser's bracket final.

Dunklin County (41-9) will play Springfield Hillcrest (42-8) at 1 p.m. today in the finals. Springfield, which is 2-0 in the tournament, needs one victory for the championship while Dunklin County needs two wins to prevail.
