Scott County wins Paragould tournament

The Scott County American Legion baseball team defeated Jonesboro 11-7 to win the Paragould tournament Sunday.

Scott County beat Paragould 8-6 to reach the title game. The team hit seven home runs in the weekend's four games.

Cody Dirnberger enjoyed a successful weekend, smacking two home runs and knocking in seven runs. Trenton Moses, who will attend Southeast Missouri State in the fall, also homered twice and drove in six.

Cody Carlyle went 6-for-13 in the tournament with a home run and seven RBIs. Teammate Caleb Seyer led off all four games with an extra-base hit, including a homer in the title game.

Chris Asmus added a home run.

Steven Dooley won two of the games on the mound for Scott County (17-8). Andy Stevens and Adam Uhrhan each picked up a win on the mound.

Cape Legion picks up three victories

The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team went 3-0 over the weekend during games played in Ballwin, Mo., improving to 22-10 on the season.

Cape defeated Washington, Mo., 11-8 on Sunday, after winning a Saturday doubleheader from Ballwin 7-4 and 13-7.

Mark Himmelberg doubled twice and had four hits Sunday. He also drove in three runs.

Zach Plott had three of Cape's 18 hits. Blake Slattery, Brad LaBruyere, Alex Shell and Brooks Osburn all added two hits.

LaBruyere struck out 12, gave up eight hits and allowed two earned runs to notch the complete-game victory.

Slattery and Shell both doubled twice and had three of Cape's 11 hits in the first game against Ballwin. Slattery also homered.

Himmelberg allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings for the win. Kory Kitchen gave up one hit in two scoreless innings for the save.

Slattery homered, had four hits and drove in five runs in the nightcap. He finished the weekend with two homers, four doubles and eight RBIs.

Himmelberg also had four of Cape's 17 hits, including a triple and double. Shell had three hits and four RBIs, while Matt Hester added two hits.

Garrett Stevens pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and four earned runs.

Cape hosts House Springs at 6 p.m. today.

Cape Senior Babe sweeps twin bill

The Cape Girardeau Senior Babe Ruth baseball team shut out Jackson twice Sunday during a doubleheader played at Saxony Lutheran High School.

Cape (11-6) won the opener 12-0 in six innings and the nightcap (scheduled for five innings) 13-0 in four innings.

In the opener, Chad Friend homered and Brett Heischmidt had two hits. Justin Myers struck out nine and allowed two hits in the complete game.

In the nightcap, Heischmidt, Tyler Propst, Luke Moll, Blake Gaddis, Dustin LeGrand and Abe Dirnberger all had two hits. Friend pitched two one-hit innings, while Dirnberger hurled two hitless frames.

Morris wins medalist honors at golf outing

Kathy Morris won the medalist honors at the Cape Girardeau Country Club Women's Golf Association's weekly outing.

LouAnne Kiefner took first place, followed by Betty Michel and E.R. Fischer.

Tanner wins three divisions at Sikeston

Puxico's Rusty Tanner won the pro-am , pro and pro-am 4 stroke/2 stroke divisions at the Sikeston Racepark on June 30.

Other winners were Brent Marler of Mayfield, Ky. (plus 30 and open am), Dylan Jimerson of Piedmont, Mo. (open stroke), Cody Barrett of Marble Hill, Mo. (450 am), John Davault of Marble Hill, Mo. (two-stroke), Travis McReynolds of Anna, Ill. (beginner), Ashley Schafer (youth/90 modified), Bryan Clayton of Sikeston, Mo. (90 prodcution) and Wayne Martin of Marble Hill, Mo. (90 stock).
