SEMO Magic ousted from World Series

The SEMO Magic 16-and-under softball team lost 3-2 to the Indiana Sonics in the NSA World Series on Wednesday in East Peoria, Ill.

The defeat eliminated the Magic from the tournament.

Kristian Burger was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. She had three strikeouts.

Whitney Ostendorf had three hits for the Magic, and Baily Reutzel added two doubles and drove in the Magic's two runs. Courtney Ostendorf, Caitlin Scheeter, Lindsey Ostendorf and Hannah Glueck each had hits.

The Magic, 32-16, play a league game next Wednesday at Shawnee Park.

Southeast's Ehlke earns academic honor

Kay Ehlke, a former tennis player at Southeast Missouri State University who completed her eligibility this year, was recently named by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as one of its scholar-athletes.

To become an ITA scholar-athlete, an individual must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Ehlke, a 4.0 student, was a four-year scholar-athlete at Southeast.

"Kay is simply the most outstanding student-athlete I have ever coached," Southeast tennis coach Jay Pacelli said. "There is no person more deserving of this honor than Kay."

Jackson Babe Ruth team wins district tournament

The Jackson All-Stars 14-year-old team won the Babe Ruth junior district tournament Tuesday night in Mineral Area, beating SEMO South 14-9.

Jackson, which went 2-0 in the three-team tournament, advances to the state tournament beginning today in Boonville, Mo.
