Wittenborn's no-hitter leads Cape in opener
SIKESTON, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau's Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team got a no-hitter from Mark Wittenborn a to breeze past Stoddard County 17-0 in seven innings in a first-round game in the American Legion District 14 Tournament.
Wittenborn struck out 14 batters and walked one.
Seth Hudson had two triples for Cape (21-14). Shane Kistner was 3-for-3 and Chris Conrad was 2-for-3 with a triple.
Also Monday, Jackson beat Chaffee 8-7 in 10 innings.
Jackson (19-16) scored the winning run in the top of the inning when Josh Vandeven singled home Josh Parham, who led off with his second double of the game. Vandeven finished with three RBIs.
Dusty Roberts, Brennan Gibson, Parham and Vandeven had two hits each for Jackson.
Parham pitched four innings to record the win.
Jackson will face top-seeded Dunklin County today at 5 p.m. Cape follows with an 8 p.m. game against Sikeston.
Correction
Students in the Oak Ridge school district can receive physicals from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 6 in the school cafeteria. An incorrect date appeared Sunday. The Southeast Missourian regrets the error.
