Fultz places first at national games
Daniel Fultz picked up a first-place medal in one of his three events at the inaugural Special Olympics National Games, which took place July 2 through 7 in Ames, Iowa.
Fultz, 23, of Cape Gir-ardeau, was first in the 100 meters for Division 26 with a time of 14.99 seconds.
He was third in Division 9 of the 4-kilogram shot put with a mark of 11.71 meters. The division boasted some of the best throws of the entire competition.
Fultz also was part of Missouri's fourth-place team in the Division 9 400-meter relay. The team finished in 58.12 seconds in the event's fastest finals division.
He was the lone athlete from the area to compete in the first-time event. Seventy-four Missouri athletes were among the 3,000 that participated.
Trent Hillis fired a 71 to win the 14 to 15 boys division at the The Gateway PGA/Southeast Missouri Junior Series golf event last Friday at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo., despite rainy weather. The eight-tournament series concluded Monday at Kimbeland Country Club.
