Fowler, Myers repeat as Lassies Classic champs

Diane Fowler and Harriette Myers of New Madrid won their fourth consecutive Lassies Classic -- and fifth overall -- winning the two-day scramble tournament Thursday at Cape Girardeau Country Club by five strokes.

In claiming the title, Fowler and Myers joined the team of Mary Bain and Polly Bess as the only five-time winners.

Betty Belote and Sandi McGinnis placed second at 132, while Robyn Young and Alice Temm, 134, took third.

Cape youth golfer improves on second day of PGA stop

Todd Obergoenner of Cape Girardeau shot a second-round 76 Thursday -- up from an opening-day 85 - but remained at the bottom of the standings with a two-day total of 161 in the Westfield Junior PGA Championship in Ohio.

Tyler Aldridge of Nampa, Idaho, leads with a two-day total of 137, two strokes ahead.

Horseshoe events end with four different winners

Cori Stoverink and Jerome Bachfish teamed to win the SEMO Horseshoe Association event Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold, Mo.

Ron LeGrand and Margie Stull were second with Kory Kluesner and Rick Garland third.

In Sunday's event at Leopold, Doris Stubenrauch and Carl Reddick won among 22 teams. Randy Grady and Joe Crader were second with Larry Burford and Darren Glastetter third.

Barbecue will benefit Southeast athletic teams

The Southeast athletic department will receive part of the funds raised in a barbecue July 26-27 at Country Mart in Jackson, Mo.

The barbecue will last from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Southeast coaches and staff will help prepare and sell the food, which is available for takeout or eating at the store.

Owens siblings receive Drury academic awards

Jason Owen and his sister, Mary Beth, have received all-american awards from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Both compete for the swimming and diving teams at Drury University in Springfield, Mo.

Both are graduates of Central High School. Jason was a junior and Mary Beth a freshman the past season.
