Nelson captures men's open singles title

Dan Nelson defeated Bill Bradley in straight sets on Sunday to win the men's open singles title in the third annual All Cancer Erased tournament played at the Southeast Missouri State tennis courts.

Nelson, of Carbondale, Ill., defeated Bradley, of Cape Girardeau, 6-4, 6-2.

Nelson also teamed with Nick Bauer to defeat Bradley and Lonnie Mobley 6-3, 6-3 in the men's doubles final.

Gary Loos needed three sets to win the men's "A" singles, defeating Ish Patel 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Maura Neader won the girls 16-and-under title, sweeping Erinne Haff 6-4, 6-4.

The team of Sue Bippen and Terri Popp won the women's doubles title with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 victory over Dani Gross and Maggie Limbaugh.

In mixed doubles, Linda Tansil and Andy Tansil swept Samantha Gross and David Gross 6-2, 6-3.

Brueckner wins division at Gateway Junior Series

Corey Brueckner shot a 76 to take first place in the boys 16 to 19 tour division at the Gateway PGA Junior Series event on Thursday at the Sikeston Country Club.

Brueckner finished two strokes ahead of Jack Connell, while T.J. Smith and Cristopher Streiler tied for third at 81.

Other 18-hole boys winners were Eric Hayes (81, 12-13 regular), John Bowman (90, 14-15 tour), Brett Slaten (78, 14-15 regular) and Austin Hunter (80, 16-19 regular).

The boys nine-hole winners were Zach Downing (51, 10-11), Justin Lynn (46, 12-13) and Ryan Richardson (50, 14-18).

Kassie Walker won the girls 16 to 18 division with a 94.

The series will hold two events this week. The fourth event in the eight tournament series is today at Cape Girardeau Country Club. .
