Poplar Bluff Speedway kicks off racing season
The Poplar Bluff Speedway kicked off the 2004 season last Saturday.
Winners of the opening night were: Chris Kelly and Brandon Moore of Portageville, Mo., in the cruiser feature race; Billy James of Sikeston, Mo., in the late model feature race; Eric Turner of Hermitage, Mo., in the special feature modified race, which paid $2,000 to the winner; Paul Reeder of Malden, Mo., in the pure street feature race; and Tony Anglin of Hoxie, Mo., in the super street feature race.
J.C. Chip A Way ladies open their season
Cissy Barnett was the medalist for the opening week of the J.C. Chip A Way ladies golf league Tuesday at the Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.
Three golfers -- Evelyn Riley, Dorothy Gill and Carol Brown -- tied for first place in the B Class.
Play of the day was "guess your score," which was won by Mary Von Cleve.
Jan Keefe won low-putt honors.
Southeast tennis signs player from Canada
The Southeast Missouri State tennis program on Thursday announced the signing of Kim Roberts, a high school senior from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Roberts played high school tennis at Clarement Secondary, which finished in the top five in British Columbia High School tennis in 2002 and '03.
She was the team MVP in 2002. Roberts currently is ranked in the top 12 for girls 18 and under in British Columbia.
Glasstetter honored at College of Pharmacy
Chrissi Glastetter of Jackson was named an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Daktronics scholar-athlete for women's basketball.
Glastetter, a fifth-year student at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, is the college's all-time leader in scoring (781 points), scoring average (17.8 points per game), assists, steals and 3-pointers.
Glastetter graduated from Jackson High School.
Stoverink, Burnett win horseshoe event
Cori Stoverink and Bob Burnett teamed up to win the SEMO Horseshoe Association's season-opening event Sunday at the Knights of Columbus in Leopold, Mo.
Doris Stubenrauch and Bob Piper placed second, while Rose Kern and Edgar Stoverink finished third.
Beasley fires hole in one on Kimbeland's No. 18
Dave Beasley of Jackson carded his first career hole-in-one Wednesday at Kimbeland Country Club.
Beasley used an 8-iron to ace No. 18, a par 3 playing 145 yards.
Witnesses were Dick Miller, Tim McDowell and Randy Balsman.
