MDC reopens Red Star access

The Missouri Department of Conservation has reopened the Red Star public fishing access, located on the Mississippi River just north of downtown Cape Girardeau on Second Street.

"We've upgraded from a single-lane boat ramp to a double lane, we paved the parking lot, built a new pavilion and restrooms, and added some new security lights," said Rocky Hayes, MDC urban forester.

The project cost a little more than $400,000. Seventy-five percent of the funds came from a federal grant and another $18,000 came from the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau. MDC paid for the rest of the project.

The City of Cape Girardeau will be paving the gravel access road from Second Street to the access in the next couple of months.

For more information, call the MDC at (573) 290-5730.
