Perryville girls team wins high school soccer bracket

Perryville won the high school girls division of the 18th annual Fall Classic Soccer Tournament, which concluded Sunday, and Perryville teams won four other divisions.

The event attracted 96 teams playing in 16 divisions.

Local champions were the Perryville Scorpions in third-grade boys B division; Cape Titans in fifth- and sixth-grade boys B division; Jackson Grey in first- and second-grade girls division; Cape Steamers in third- and fourth-grade girls B division; Perryville Extreme in the fifth- and sixth-grade girls division; and Perryville Magic in the seventh- and eighth-grade girls division.

SEMO Judo Club members win medals in meet

Members of the SEMO Judo Club brought home three gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes from the St. Louis Open Judo Tournament at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo.

The team consisted of juniors Abby Crouch, Alex Rhodes and Marcus Rhodes, and seniors Crystal Pierce, Andy Dodd, Brent Panno and John Volkerding.

The club is co-sponsored and funded by grants through the 32nd Judicial Circuit Juvenile Division and Southeast Missouri State University Recreation Club Sports. Pierce, Dodd and Randy Rhodes are nationally certified instructors and provide the coaching.

The club has practices 5 p.m. Sunday for juniors (ages 6 to 12) and 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays for seniors. Practices take place at the SEMO South Student Recreation Center.

"The effort and progress from our students was really outstanding," said instructor Randy Rhodes, a circuit juvenile officer. "I am already looking forward to next summer's program."

Heartland earns honors at gymnastics competition

Heartland Gymnastics of Cape Girardeau had six all-around champions in its season-opening competition Nov. 12 at Farmington, Mo.

The Level 4 and 5 teams each placed first in the team standings, while Level 3 placed second.

In Level 3, 9-year-old Sierra Jones and 8-year-old Alyssa Kimmich won all-around titles. Jones also was first in vault and bars; Kimmich placed first in those same events.

In Level 4, Molly McConnell topped the 9-year-olds division, while Kanaan Rhodes, 13, won the 10-and-over division. McConnell was first in the floor exercise, while Rhodes won the vault and the balance beam.

In Level 5, Alyssa Garner, 9, won the 10-and-under all-around, while Hannah Litwicki, 11, topped the 11-and-over division. Garner swept the vault, bars, beam and floor. Litwicki was first on the bars.

Other first-place finishers for Heartland were: Macie Borgfield, 7, in Level 3 balance beam; Hannah Shaw, 9, in Level 3 beam; Bailey Watkins, 8, in Level 3 beam; Ariel Dumars, 11, in Level 4 floor and bars; Brooke Grable, 9, in Level 4 beam; Alexis Phillips, 5, in Level 4 vault for 7-and-under; and Cassie Hindman, 11, in Level 5 bars and floor.

Other competitors, and their top finishes, were: Allie Below, 9, third in Level 3 beam; Alexia Phillips, 10, second in Level 5 beam; and Karsen Powers, 9, second in Level 5 floor.

Bankson cards ace

on par 4 hole

Deno Bankson of Olive Branch, Ill., carded a hole in one recently at Egyptian Country Club in Mounds, Ill.

Bankson performed the feat with a driver on the 299-yard 11th hole, which is a par 4. Witnesses were Chris Curtis, Terry Farrow and Mark Simmons.
