HILLSBORO -- Jackson High's softball team evened its record at 1-1 by beating host Hillsboro 7-4 in extra innings Thursday.

The Lady Indians scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Emily Sander had the game-winning hit, a two-run single.

Sander and Gretchen King both had two hits and King was also the winning pitcher as she went the distance and hurled a five-hitter.

"It's good to get the first win," said Jackson coach Becky Riney. "We've had two real good games to start the season (Jackson lost at St. Louis Notre Dame 3-2 Wednesday)."

Jackson will compete in the tough Cor Jesu Tournament in St. Louis today and Saturday. Today's two opponents will be Cor Jesu and Lindbergh.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jackson 5, Kennett 4

JACKSON -- Jackson improved to 2-0 on the young season Thursday by claiming a narrow win at home.

The teams split the six singles matches but Jackson won two of the three doubles to prevail.

JV action wound up in a 6-6 tie.
