The job that former area basketball coach and educator Darrin Scott has chosen to undertake in this next chapter of life has changed, but the tasks that go along with it haven’t.
“Some of the things that I liked the most in teaching,” Scott said of his 31 years in the classroom and on the court, “was the interaction. The personal part became just as important, and I enjoyed that just as much, as the coaching.”
Scott recently retired from Jackson High School and is serving as the Area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Southeast Missouri.
The organization has had several events for young people, as well as coaches, this summer, with the next one being a “Huddle Leadership Camp” at Notre Dame High School on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as at First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff on Friday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).
A “huddle” is essentially a group of students, who meet regularly. However, the event at Notre Dame is for those students, who have a calling to be leaders within a particular “Huddle.”
“Let’s say you go to Cape Central,” Scott explained, “and you want to be a part of their huddle, but you want to lead it.”
The leadership camp is being organized by Josh Mills (JoshMills@FCA.org), who works with the FCA throughout Southeast Missouri, and he will be instructing the attendees in large group and small group settings, as well as individual training.
Attendees will learn how to develop a “Huddle Plan” for their particular teams.
“It’s up to the school how they want to (schedule Huddles),” Scott explained. “It can look however they want it to, but it could be a Bible study, or they could have a speaker come in and share something. But basically, it’s a huddle and they will come (together) and meet, and they are going to hear The Word,” share fellowship, and do some things.”
The leadership camp is open to all junior high and high school students, and they can register on the organization’s Facebook page via a QR scan.
“FCA’s goal is,” Scott said, “can we bring every athlete and every coach to know Jesus and get them into a church where they can grow?
“That really is what our mission is.”
