Richmond wins 5K at women's distance festival

Susan Richmond placed first in the 46-runner field for the 5-kilometer race at the Southeast Missouri Hospital Women's Distance Festival.

More than 100 competitors took part in the day's activities, which also included a 5K walk and a 1-mile run.

Richmond finished the distance in 22 minutes, 14 seconds.

Julie Wunderlich was second overall in 23:11, and Katrina Voelker was third in 23:24.

Abby Miller won the 1-mile run in 7:12, while Dale Ann Humphries topped the walkers in 35:53.

Smith wins quota tourney at Dalhousie

Lee Smith won the men's quota tournament Sept. 2 at Dalhousie Golf Club with a plus-9 total.

Placing second was Aaron Dombrowski (plus-8), while Mark Unger (plus-4) and George Landre (plus-4) tied for third. Tom Hamilton (plus-2), David Hahs (plus-2) and Terry Bozzay (plus-2) tied for fifth, while Roger Tolliver (plus-1) and Jay Sheets (plus-1) tied for eighth.

Each player's quota is determined by subtracting his handicap from 36. A player then attempts to surpass his quota, gaining points for bogeys (1), pars (2), birdies (3) and eagles (5).

Kidds, Morgans win Labor Day tournament

Forrest Kidd, Ernie Kidd, Bill Morgan and Joan Morgan shot a 60 to post a five-stroke victory in the Labor Day four-person scramble at Dalhousie Golf Club.

Placing second was the foursome of Mark McDowell, Christy McDowell, Ron Seabaugh and Phyllis Seabaugh. The foursome shot a 65, as did the third-place team of Jack Connell Jr., Cathy Connell, Corey Connell and Emily Matthews.

Closest to the pin winners were Forrest Kidd (Nos. 5 and 13), Joan Morgan (No. 8) and Mary Jane Eftink (No. 11). The winning foursome also posted the low-putt total of 21.

Morris medalist at Cape Country Club

Kathy Morris was the 18-hole medalist last week in the Cape Girardeau Country Club Ladies Day event.

The play of the day was low putts. Morris tied for low putts with Pat Strom and Beth Mapes. Mary Sue Layton finished behind that group.

The medalist over nine holes was Betty Price.

Long, McCune take honors at Kimbeland

Vicki Long was the medalist and Sharon McCune won the play of the day in the women's golf league at Kimbeland Country Club in Jackson.

Dorothy Holland and Dixie Jones tied atop the "A" flight in the play of the day while Janis Gilbert won the "B" flight.

Kennedy top 10 in IPC world events

Jill Kennedy, a Zalma native now living in Charlottesville, Va., placed sixth in the shot put on Sept. 3 and was seventh in the discus Thursday at the International Paralympics Committee Athletics World Championships in Assen, The Netherlands.

Kennedy, 35, competes in the dwarf-only class of the IPC competitions, She has participated in the 2002 Paralympic Games in Australia and was a two-event medalist in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Greece. She was the oldest competitor in the discus field and among the oldest in the shot put.

Kennedy had a throw of 19 feet 2 3/4 inches in the shot put, while Laila El Garaa of Morocco set a world record of 25-1 1/2. Her sister, Najat El Garaa was second at 24-7 1/4.

In the discus, Kennedy's throw was 56-2. Najat El Garaa was first in 77-7 1/4 while Laila El Garaa finished second with a throw of 75-11.

Powell, Cook win at Benton Neighbor Day

Andrew Powell and Lachelle Cook placed first in the SEMO Horseshoe Association event Saturday at the Benton Neighbor Day in Benton, Mo.

Jeff Miller and Cody Dirnberger placed second, while Jason Lawless and Cory Kluesner took third.

Jake Kluesner and Randy Senciboy won the Sunday competition. Cook and Mike Kluesner finished second, while Carolyn Schreckenberg and Cory Kluesner placed third.
