Capahas win fourth game in Indiana tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Tristen McDonald hit a pair of two-run home runs late in the game to seal the Capahas' 11-0 win over Beckley, W.V., in a tournament Saturday in Evansville.

McDonald hit his home runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away. Josh Eftink added a three-run homer in the sixth.

Brad Simmons was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Capahas, who played Saline Co., Ill., late Saturday. Chris Sledge was 2-for-3 with a double; Tom Bolen was 2-for-2.

Jason Chavez pitched all seven innings with 11 strikeouts, two walks and four hits.

Cape Legion team avenges loss to Manchester

ST. LOUIS -- The Cape Girardeau American Legion baseball team defeated Manchester 6-2 Saturday to avenge a loss Friday in a St. Louis tournament.

John Thies pitched his fifth complete game of the season with two runs (one earned), 13 strikeouts and no walks in nine innings. Shane Kistner was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Matt Wulfers had a triple; Tim Wincewicz and Josh Ford had doubles for Cape (13-12), which plays Crestwood at 10 a.m. today.

Jackson Junior Legion splits with Imperial

JACKSON, Mo. -- Trey Busch was 2-for-3 and Tyler Beussink 2-for-4 with a double to lift Jackson (16-14) past Imperial 6-5 in the first game of a Junior Legion baseball doubleheader Saturday.

Kyle McMinn pitched all seven innings with 11 hits and five runs (two earned). He also went 3-for-4 with a double.

Imperial won the second game 9-4. Dane Ballsman took the loss in 3 1/3 innings with five earned runs. McMinn was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Babe Ruth tournament narrowed to final four

The field was narrowed to four Saturday in the Pop's Pizza Firecracker Classic for Babe Ruth baseball teams.

Today's schedule features the final teams in semifinal games. The Cape Girardeau Yankees play New Madrid at 1 p.m. at Capaha Park and Dexter plays Chaffee at 1 p.m. at Central High. The winners meet at 4 p.m. at Capaha Park.

Among Saturday's highlights:

The Yankees defeated Oran 6-5 after three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Daniel was 2-for-4 and Mark Dunaway 2-for-3, including a two-run home run. Arthur Pilsner had a two-run triple and Matt Smith an RBI double. Kyle Duncan pitched the win and Jason Meystedt got the save.

Dexter defeated Scott City 31-1 in five innings. Brent Montgomery and Luke Carter combined for a no-hitter. Ben Duncan was 4-for-4.

Dunklin County defeated Oran 14-10 in a game that ended because of the two-hour time limit rule. Kenny Abernathy pitched the win.

The Yankees defeated South Pemiscot 9-3. Adam Ralls pitched the win and had a key two-out single with the bases loaded in the third.

Oran defeated Scott City 5-1. Patrick Frigga got the win; Jason Bahr was 3-for-3 and Matt Seyer 2-for-4 for Oran. Steven Posey was 2-for-3 for Scott City.

Other scores: Chaffee defeated South Pemiscot 11-1, New Madrid defeated Kennett 18-6, South Pemiscot defeated the Cape Girardeau Athletics 5-2, and Dexter defeated the Athletics 11-0.
