Cape Jr. Legion opens district with win

Thomas Crocetti only allowed two hits and struck out two in a complete-game effort for the Cape Girardeau Plaza Tire Junior American Legion baseball team Thursday.

Aaron Grainger knocked in three runs to lead Cape past Sikeston 5-0 in the district tournament opener.

Austin Caldwell went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Nick Essner scored twice.

Cape (12-15) will play host Jackson at 5 p.m. today with the loser facing Sikeston at 7 p.m. today in an elimination game.

Arpin shoots 77 to win division

Tyler Arpin carded a 77 to defeat Kirk Hoggart by three strokes in the boys 16 to 19 18 hole tour division at the Gateway Junior PGA Series tournament Thursday at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Carson Miles shot a 45 to defeat Nathan Woolard and Jonathan Bell by a stroke in the boys 10 and 11 nine holes division

Cobras win opener in pool play

The Southeast Missouri Cobras baseball team defeated the Southern Illinois Diamond Dogs 7-4 in the SIU college showcase in Carbondale, Ill.

Denton Daugherty earned the win on the mound, and Trey Tigart got the save.

Tyler Anderson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Ryan Fortner went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Jackson Sr. Babe Ruth wins opener

The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth baseball team defeated Bardwell, Ky., 10-8 in the opening round of the Charleston wood bat tournament Thursday.

Spencer Sander and Shawn Hadler collected two hits apiece.

Jackson scored five in the third inning and five in the fourth.

Matt Stueve earned the win in relief. Jesse Long picked up the save for Jackson (19-12).

Smileys, Gardiners team for victory

Butch and Karen Smiley teamed with Oscar and Mary Gardiner to win the D flight at the Cape Girardeau Country Club's Fourth of July couples tournament.

Mark and Linda Wissman joined Mac and Shari McConnell to finish second.
