Halter edges Palmer in putt-off

Justin Halter defeated John Austin Palmer in a putt-off to win the boys 14 to 19 nine holes division at the Gateway Junior PGA Series tournament at Kennett Country Club.

Halter and Palmer both carded 59s.

Amy Blattel defeated Adele Soutar in a putt-off to win the girls 14 to 19 nine holes division.

Bean earns medalist honors

Mary Ellen Bean was the 18-holes medalist at the Cape Girardeau Country Club's Women's Golf Association's weekly outing.

Marcia Wagner was the nine-holes winner.

Bean finished first, followed by Beth Mapes and a tie between Irene Thomas and Mary Sue Layton for third place.

Six local golfers qualify for Amateur

Four golfers from Cape Girardeau and two from Jackson earned a spot in the Missouri Amateur at Wednesday's qualifying tournament at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Jackson's Ronnie Strong shot a 33-38--71 to tie for sixth place, while Jackson's Travis Simmons was a shot back at 39-33--72.

Cape Girardeau's Brevin Giebler (38-35--73), David Babcock (38-37--75), Blake Driskell (39-36--75) and Tim Simmons (40-36--76) also qualified.

Cape Girardeau's Corey Connell is the first alternate (36-41--77).

The Missouri Amateur is scheduled for June 19 to 24 at Dalhousie Golf Club.

Angle, Howard share honors

Lil Angle and Vickie Howard tied for medalist honors in A flight at the Chip-A-Ways weekly golf outing at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Christy Lind was medalist in B flight, while Pat Harrison had the lowest putts.
