Cape Sr. Legion loses on the road to Festus
Cape Girardeau's Ford & Sons Senior American Legion baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision to host Festus Wednesday night in its season opener.
John Thies picked up the loss. He worked five innings, allowing four runs and five hits.
Ford & Sons had 11 hits but left 12 men on base and hit into four double plays. Dustin Tatum and Seth Hudson both had two hits and Patrick Slattery drove in two runs.
Cape will play this weekend in the Eureka Classic in the St. Louis area. There will be two games Saturday, against Maryland Heights at 11 a.m. and Eureka at 1:45 p.m., and a contest Sunday against Liberty at 12:20 p.m.
Cape Jr. Legion sweeps home doubleheader
Cape Girardeau's Cliff's Rent To Own Junior Legion team swept a doubleheader from visiting Anna (Ill.) Wednesday.
Cape (7-3) won the opener 8-2 and the finale 11-4 in six innings.
Tyrone Reece pitched five strong innings to pick up the win in the opener. Zach Hudson, Matt Hellrich and Steve Miinch had two hits apiece for Cape.
In the second game, Cape managed only six hits but used a nine-run fifth inning to cruise. Scott Brueckner had the big hit in the inning with a bases-clearing triple. Blake Essner pitched four innings for the win.
Jackson Jr. Legion wins tournament opener
Trey Busch pitched a compete-game two-hitter as Jackson's Junior Legion team won its opening game 5-1 against New Port, Ark., Thursday in the Jonesboro, Ark., tournament.
Busch helped himself at the plate as well, banging out two triples and driving in two. Casey Cain added two hits and scored twice. Jackson managed only six hits in the win, but also stole six bases which helped lead to its five runs.
Jackson (5-3) will face host Jonesboro at 3:15 p.m. today.
Kimbeland golf team wins at Ste. Genevieve
Betty Belote, Harriet Drusch, Barb Johnson and Peggy Fee from Kimbeland Country Club won the championship flight at the Ste. Genevieve golf tournament Wednesday.
