Driskell wins qualifier tourney

Cape Girardeau's Blake Driskell shot a 68 to win the Missouri Amateur Championship qualifying tournament Wednesday at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Driskell, who graduated from Central, shot a 33-35--68 on the par-71 course.

Jackson's Tim Simmons shot a 36-36--72 to earn a spot in the field as well.

The Missouri Amateur will be played later this month in Springfield, Mo.

Deere edges Leimbach for first

Evan Deere shot a 72 to beat Brett Leimbach by four strokes to win the boys 16- to 19-year olds tour division at the season-opening Gateway Junior PGA Series event Wednesday at Hidden Trails Country Club.

Ben Murray and Kirk Hoggatt both shot 83s to tie for first in the boys 14 and 15 tour division.

Cape Junior Legion splits doubleheader

The Cape Plaza Tire Junior American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with the Chaffee Senior Babe Ruth club Tuesday night.

An eight-run seventh inning sparked Chaffee to a 13-6 win in the opener.

Jered Walker, Alex Davie and Andrew Terhune all had multiple hits for Chaffee.

Cape rebounded to win the nightcap 14-3 in five innings behind a 12-strikeout performance from starter Adam Pennington.

LeGrand, Stoverink win tournament

The team of Ron LeGrand and Cori Stoverink teamed to win the SEMO Horseshoe Association's tournament at the Benton American Legion.

Bob Burnett and Lachelle Cook placed second, while Don Riley and Terrie Rose were third in the 15-team tournament.

The next tournament will be Sunday at the Leopold Knights of Columbus.

Morris ties for fifth at tourney

Kathy Morris tied for fifth place at the SEMO Ladies Golf Association's tournament at Kennett Country Club.

Morris shot a 79.

Marlena Jones tied for second in B flight with an 86.

Mary Ellen Bean placed fifth in C flight with a 91, while Cindy Schmoll tied for fourth in D flight with a 96.
