Obergoenner earns academic all-district
Central graduate Todd Obergoenner recently was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first team.
Obergoenner was a co-captain on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's golf team. He posted a 74.4 stroke average on the course and a 4.0 grade-point average in exercise science in the classroom this season.
Gators enjoy successful meets
The Gators swimming team has been compiling SMSC record after record at meets this season.
Gabby Vieira set individual records in the 11-12 girls division in the following events: 50-meter freestyle (29.90 seconds), 50 butterfly (32.74) and 100 individual medley (1:16.90) at Perryville; 100-yard freestyle (58.28), 50 backstroke (31.16) and 100 individual medley (1:09.97) at Sikeston; 50-yard backstroke (31.05) and 50 butterfly (28.84) at Cape Girardeau; 100-meter freestyle (1:05.26) and 50 backstroke (35.23) at Scott City.
Austin Hobbs set an individual record in the 11-12 boys 100-meter individual medley (1:25.57) at Perryville, then lowered it to 1:22.09 in Scott City.
Stephen Sugarbaker set a record in the 11-12 boys 100-yard individual medley (1:23.75) at Sikeston.
Kyleigh Troxel broke a conference record in the 13-14 girls 100-yard butterfly (1:05.32) at Cape Girardeau.
Elizabeth Rorick, Caitlyn Palmer, Elizabeth Kiefner and Vieira set a conference record in the 11-12 girls 200-meter freestyle relay (2:08.83) at Perryville.

Hubbard wins men's A singles title
Josh Hubbard of Cape Girardeau took first place in the men's A singles division at the All Cancer Erased tennis tournament.
Terri Popp of Jackson and Dona Graham of Olney, Ill., won the women's open doubles, while Troy Bell of Poplar Bluff beat Rob Lowery of Benton, Ill., 6-2, 7-6, to win the men's open singles.
Jerry Kinnaman of Cape Girardeau and Mike Moore of Sikeston beat Tim Flatt of Carbondale, Ill., and George Skalsky of Chicago, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the men's open doubles.
Sara and Troy Bell beat Chelsea and Tim Flatt, 6-4, 6-3, in the mixed doubles.
Cook, Jacobs team for title
Lachelle Cook and Joe Jacobs took first place at the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association tournament at the Scott City Knights of Columbus.
Rose Kern and Jerome Backfisch took second, while Carolyn Schreckenberg and Brian Ressel were third.
Schreckenberg and James Hillis took first at the Backyard Club tournament.
Danny Williams and Virgil Schreckenberg were second, while Cook and Joe Keller took third.
The next tournament is Saturday at the Oran Jaycees.
Bean captures first place
Mary Ellen Bean took first place at the Cape Girardeau Women's Golf Association's weekly outing.
Pat Strom took first in the nine-hole division.
