Dalhousie tourney honored by AJGA

The Dalhousie Junior Championship has earned the American Junior Golf Association's Tournament of the Year award for the second straight year, the AJGA announced Thursday. The second edition of the tournament was held Aug. 11 to 14 at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau.

The event, which attracted 144 players from 26 states, was one of 84 on the AJGA schedule last year. The tournament is the first repeat winner of the award.

Dalhousie Golf Club will host the Rolex Tournament of Champions this year. The 72-hole tournament, the AJGA's longest-running event, will be held June 30 to July 4. The 144-player field will feature the best junior golfers from around the world.

Thrower aces hole at Bent Creek

Tyler Thrower recorded a hole in one Wednesday at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson.

Thrower used a 6-iron to ace No. 8, which was playing 185 yards. Jim Burns witnessed the shot.

Sikeston's Porter picks Missouri St.

Sikeston senior forward Michael Porter is apparently headed to Missouri State to play college basketball.

Porter has given Missouri State a verbal commitment, picking the Bears among a list of finalists that included Southeast Missouri State.

Porter had recently narrowed his college choices to Missouri State, Southeast, Arkansas State and Morehead State.

As a senior, Porter averaged 21.3 points and 8.4 rebounds for a 24-4 Sikeston team that lost in the Class 4 quarterfinals. He is a four-time all-state selection.

The earliest Porter can make it official with Missouri State is April 15, the first day of the spring signing period.

Keys qualifies for bowling tourney

Tyler Keys, a 17-year-old senior at Delta High School, qualified for the Teen Masters High School National Bowling Tournament for the fourth time.

Keys qualified in both the team and singles competition July 31 to Aug. 5 in Las Vegas. In the regional qualifying in Clarksville, Tenn., Key's five-person team placed first, and he placed third in singles with a 196 average over six games.
