Post 63 earns pair of victories
The Cape Girardeau Plaza Tire Post 63 Junior American Legion baseball team won both games it played Saturday as the host of the River City Roundup.
Jamie Pickel used both his arm and hot bat to lead Plaza Tire to an 8-3 win in its first game, against the Southern Illinois Bullets.
Pickel tossed a complete game, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits. He struck out five, did not walk a batter and improved to 4-3.
He also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Jacob Conklin smashed a three-run home run in the first inning and Stephen Carman stroked a two-run double in the seventh.
In the second game, Plaza Tire staged two late-game rallies to beat Paducah, Ky., Junior Legion 4-3 in eight innings.
Tyler Buelow singled home Brandon Peters in the seventh inning to tie the game 2-2. After Plaza Tire fell behind 3-2 in the top of the eighth, it came back with two in the bottom half to win it. B.I. Howard stroked a walkoff single that scored Josh Hiett.
Howard was the winning pitcher to improve his record to 1-1. Howard relieved Peters who went 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits.
