Scott wins gold in international meet

Susan Beth Scott of Cape Girardeau won her first gold medal in international competition Friday, winning the 400-meter freestyle at the Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Scott won in a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 45.57 seconds.

Scott also won a silver medal Thursday in the 200 IM.

She has won a total of four silvers at the games, also taking silver in the 100 freestyle, 34-pt. medley relay and 100 backstroke.

Redhawks senior midfielder Molli Beard scored the game's only goal as the Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team opened exhibition play Friday night with a 1-0 victory over host University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Beard scored in the 34th minute off a pass from forward Lauren Lacopo.

Senior Lindsay Pickering and sophomore Rachel Harrington combined for the shutout in goal.

Southeast outshot UMSL 14-4.

The Redhawks will visit SIU-Edwardsville for an exhibition game today at 7 p.m.
