Scott County opensWorld Series with loss

The Scott County Cal Ripken Baseball 12-and-under all-star team lost its opening game at the World Series in Van Buren, Ark.

Scott County, which came into the tourney 10-0, lost to Bridgewater, N.J., 10-4 on Thursday.

Alan-Micheal Hess took the loss for Scott County, falling to 8-1.

Kody Moore had a home run and a double, while Jared Yates had a double for Scott County.

Bridgewater scored eight runs in the second inning to blow the game open and added two more in the sixth. Bridgewater outhit Scott County 11-6, and Scott County made four errors to Bridgewater's zero.

Scott County continues pool play with upcoming games against Wakulla, Fla.; Scottsdale, Ariz.; and the host team.

Mapes records aceat Country Club

Dr. Mike Mapes scored a hole in one July 31 at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Mapes used a utility wood to ace the 130-yard, par-3 eighth hole.

Witnesses were Bill Gerecke and Lynn VanMatre.

Himmelberg amongDalhousie's top juniors

Thomas Himmelberg is spending this weekend in Vincennes, Ind., playing in the Cal Ripken World Series with the Cape Girardeau 10-and-under all-stars.

Before he left, he picked up a title in the Dalhousie Golf Club Junior Club Championship. Himmelberg won the 10-year-old competition, which covered four holes.
