Heartland team drops World Series opener
The Heartland Nationals 12-and-under softball team dropped its opening game at the Babe Ruth League World Series in Wilson, N.C., on Friday.
The Nationals allowed five runs in the first inning and Johnson County, N.C., held on for the 6-3 victory.
Courtney Scheeter, Kacie Gaines and Brandi Glastetter all scored for Heartland.
Summer Burger allowed five runs, all unearned, in five innings to take the loss.
None of the nine runs in the game was earned. Heartland committed eight errors while Johnson County committed four.
The team returns to action today at 2 p.m.
Greenie Meanies win postseason tournament
The Stevens Chiropractic Greenie Meanies girls softball team went 9-1 in the regular season and 3-0 in the postseason tournament in the midget division.
Juliette Hendrix delivered the game-winning hit in the title game, a 2-1 victory over Service Master.
Three local athletes earn academic honors
Three local athletes at Maryville University earned academic all-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors for 2006-07.
Notre Dame graduates Lee Essner (baseball) and Megan Holloway (women's soccer) and Perryville graduate Amber Hacker (women's soccer) earned honors.
Cook, Kluesner combine to win horseshoe event
Lachelle Cook and Kory Kluesner teamed to win the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association tournament at the American Legion in Benton, Mo., recently.
The team of Tori Vandeven and Brent Prindle took second. Mike Kluesner and Dylan Elfrink took third.
Central announces football practice times
The Cape Central football team, for players in grades 10 to 12, will practice Monday and Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
The team will hold practice from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The team will begin practice at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with the moms-only football clinic scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Central freshman football team will begin practicing Monday, with practice running from 6 to 8 p.m. each night until the beginning of the school year.
