Cape falls in titlegame of junior tourney

After a pair of one-run victories Friday night put the Cape Girardeau American Legion junior baseball team into the final of the District 14 tournament, Plaza Tire ran out of magic on Saturday with a one-run loss.

The 4-3 loss Saturday morning to Dunklin County came only hours after Plaza Tire staved off elimination against the same team. Cape had beaten Dunklin County 2-1 on Friday night.

Cape came close to a another one-run victory on Saturday, as it took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But Dunklin County ended the game and Cape's season with a two-run, walk-off home run with one out in the inning.

Losing pitcher Blake Smith pitched 6 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits, struck out two and walked one.

Cape, which had five hits in the game, finished its season at 24-29.

Pobst, Brown, Standwin hospital scramble

The trio of Justin Pobst, Nathan Brown and Rocky Stand placed first in championship flight Friday at the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation's 13th Annual Golf Tournament at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Placing second was the team of Jim Childress, J.P. Arpin and Jack Pettet. Mark Edwards, Brad Guess and Larry Stovesand took third.

JIm Ham, Wayne Nesslein and Kenny Bramlett won A flight, and Kyle Shaffer, Geoff Smith and Gary Walker claimed B flight.

B flight -- 1. Kyle Shaffer, Geoff Smith, Gary Walker; 2. Kim Grieble, David Strong, Jerry Shipman; 3. Andrew Elizadale, Travis Hyslop, Steve Shelton.

Kneer fires ace at Cape Girardeau C.C.

Mark Kneer of Cape Girardeau carded a hole in one Saturday at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Kneer used a 5-wood to ace No. 16, a 180-yard par 3.

Witnesses were Adam Burnham, Dick Caldwell and Wally Lage.
