Plaza Tire reachesdistrict title game

The Plaza Tire Cape Girardeau American Legion junior baseball team forced a championship showdown with Dunklin County in the District 14 tournament in Jackson with a pair of dramatic victories.

After rallying for a 10-9 victory in an elimination game against Scott County, Plaza Tire scored a seventh-inning run for a 2-1 win over Dunklin County, -- previously unbeaten in the tournament.

Josh Meyer pitched a complete game against Dunklin County, which had sent the Cape squad into the losers bracket a day earlier. Meyer allowed nine hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Mark Hagedorn had two of Cape's five hits.

After Dunklin scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 1-1, Cape scored the winning run in the seventh on an error.

Against Scott County, Plaza Tire (24-8, 4-1 tournament) avoided elimination with an eight-run sixth. In the decisive inning, Cape collected four of its seven hits in the game and capitalized on five walks. Brian Grigaitis had a double in the inning, and Josh Compas and Hagedorn both added two-run singles.

Tanner Hiett earned the victory with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief. Wesley Glaus recorded the save as he obtained the final out.

Plaza Tire will face Dunklin County in the championship game at 11 a.m. today.

Reid wins finalGateway Junior event

Alex Reid carded a 73 for the low round of the day in the boys 16 to 19 tour division as the Gateway PGA Junior Series concluded its season Friday at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

In other tour competition, Eric Hayes won the boys 14 to 15 class with a 77.

The 18 holes of regular competition was highlighted by a hole in one by Brett Martindale, who won the boys 16 to 19 competition. Martindale aced the 166-yard 16th hole with a 5-iron during his round of 93.

In other 18-hole regular play, Jesse Hency (83) won the boys 12 to 13, and Brandon Pleiman (80) claimed first in boys 14 to 15.

Emily Matthews won the girls 18-hole competition with a 100.

In boys nine-hole classes, Ryan McVey (48) took first in ages 10 to 11; Tyler Arpin (43) topped the field in ages 12 to 13; and Ben Matthews (65) captured first in ages 14 to 18.

Ladies Day eventat Dalhousie

Carol Largent posted the low total on par 3s and par 5s at the Ladies Day event Thursday at Dalhousie Golf Club.

Robin Davis carded the low par 4 score on the front nine and Kim Swartz had the low par 4 total on the back nine.

Williams tops fieldat Chip-A-Ways event

JoAnn Williams captured A flight in the Chip-A-Ways competition this week at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Dottie Gill placed first in B flight, and Sharon Dow claimed the low-putt total. Linda Williams won the play of the day.

Caudle wins classat Sikeston Drag Strip

Oran racer Mitch Caudle captured first place in Trophy Class at the Sikeston Drag Strip competition Saturday.

Caudle had an elapsed time of 11.33 seconds, a reaction time of .538 and reached a top speed of 61.14 mph.
