Southeast drops to 0-3 in Maine tournament
ORONO, Maine -- Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball team took on another major conference opponent Saturday in the second day of the Maine Tournament.
And, just as they did Friday, the Otahkians came away with a three-set loss. After losing in three sets to the University of Colorado a day earlier, Southeast fell to Big Ten power Penn State. The Nittany Lions handed Southeast its third straight loss to open the season, 30-23, 30-17 and 30-19.
Sarah Frost was the only Otahkian in double figures with 10 kills. Emily Scannell had 22 assists.
In Friday's late match, Southeast dropped a five-setter to Maine. The Black Bears won the first two sets 30-23 and 30-22 before Southeast came back to win the next two 30-24 and 30-22. Maine prevailed 15-4 in the deciding set.
Suzanne Gundlach led Southeast with 13 kills and Frost had 11. Scannell had 34 assists and eight kills.
Southeast soccer team meets Oakland today
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- After posting a 2-1 win over Ohio University in the Illini Cup opener Southeast Missouri State University's soccer team will take on Oakland University today.
Oakland, an NCAA Tournament qualifier last season, defeated the University of Illinois 1-0 in the other tournament game Friday.
Erin Slattery and Valerie Henderson scored goals for Southeast, and Amanda Wrzos had four saves.
Jackson finishes 2-2 at Cor Jesu tournament
ST. LOUIS -- Jackson's softball team recovered from a tough morning to go 2-2 at the Cor Jesu Tournament Saturday.
The Indians (3-2) lost their first two games to Claremore (Okla.) and Cor Jesu 9-0 and 10-0 respectively. Jackson had three hits in the two combined.
Jackson recovered in the afternoon to win two low-scoring games. Kelly Riggs pitched a pair of complete games for the Indians. Jackson beat Lindbergh 3-1 and Jefferson City 2-0. Riggs finished with eight strike outs, three walks and eight hits allowed.
Trisha Kluesner went 2-for-3 with a triple in Jackson's win over Lindbergh.
Eagle Ridge second in New Salem tournament
Eagle Ridge Christian School lost in three sets to Bethel in the finals of the New Salem Baptist volleyball tournament Saturday.
Bethel won 25-27, 25-16, 25-21. Ashley Hughes had five assists and five service points for the Eagles.
Eagle Ridge made it to the finals by defeating New Salem 25-23, 25-23. Hughes had 25 assists against New Salem. New Salem beat Southern Missouri for third place.
MacKenzie Jones and Holly Jordan of New Salem were picked for the all-tournament team, as was Hughes, Rachel Carbaugh and Rachel Crowden of Eagle Ridge.
