Otahkians defeat Ohio in soccer season opener
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team won its season opener 2-1 against Ohio University in the opening round of the Illini Cup.
"This was an important win for us because Ohio usually advances to the NCAA tournament," Southeast coach Heather Nelson said.
Erin Slatterty scored the first goal of the game for Southeast with assists by Marla Gianino and Heather Reding.
Each team had two shots on goal in the first half.
"Overall it was a good, physical battle," Nelson said.
Valerie Henderson scored less than five minutes into the second half on a feed from Erika Todd and Jen Cross.
Southeast will face Oakland University at noon Sunday.
Colorado sweeps SE in volleyball opener
ORONO, Maine -- Colorado swept Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball team in its season opener Friday. Colorado won 31-29, 30-16, 30-21.
Suzanne Gundlach had 10 kills for the Otahkians, and Emily Scannell had 26 assists.
Van Cleve, Grimes win at Chip-A-Ways outing
Mary Van Cleve won the Class A flight of the weekly Cape Chip-A-Ways outing.
Liz Grimes won the Class B flight, Lillian Angle was the winner of the play of the day competition and Carol Brown won the low putts competition.
Stoverink, Kluesner win area horseshoe event
Corie Stoverink and Mike Kluesner defeated 19 teams to win the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson.
Tyler Elfrink and Kenneth Polmen were second, and Lindi Raines and Virgil Schreckenberg were third.
Rose Kern and Brent Prindle won Saturday's event at the Oran Fall Festival. Karen Burks and Rick Garland were second, and Lachelle Cook and Tom Kluesner were third among 19 teams.
