Southeast loses to SLU in exhibition meeting

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis University freshman Courtney Hulcer scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Billikens past Southeast Missouri State University 3-2 in a women's soccer exhibition match

The Otahkians jumped on top in the seventh minute when midfielder Marla Gianino scored on a break-in off a feed from forward Erika Todd. But the Billikens tied it in the 13th minute when Christie Cigno scored.

The Billikens grabbed the lead at 40:14 when freshman Anna Schuch beat Southeast's Amanda Wrzos with a looping 10-yard shot over the keeper. Hulcer scored again in the 60th minute.

Todd assisted on her second goal of the night to bring the Otahkians back within a goal in the 71st minute.

Former Advance native leads team to title shot

Advance High School graduate Kenny Emerson has his team from Boynton Beach, Fla., in position to win the U.S. championship game of the Little League World Series today.

Emerson, 48, moved to Boynton Beach in 1980 and is the coach of this year's team. It won the Southeast regional championship and will play Saugus, Mass., at 6 p.m. today in Williamsport, Pa. The game airs on ABC, locally on WSIL.

Boynton Beach defeated Chandler, Ariz., 4-1 in a semifinal game Wednesday. Emerson's son Cody, 12, is a member of the team.

The winner today will play the winner of the international final between Tokyo and Curaco, Netherlands Antilles at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
