Cape golfer tied for 17th at Junior PGA tournament
Todd Obergoenner of Cape Girardeau is tied for 17th after Wednesday's first round of the Westfield Junior PGA Championship in Westfield Center, Ohio.
Obergoenner shot a first-round 74 on the par-71 course at Westfield Group Country Club. He's tied with seven other junior golfers who trail leader Webb Simpson of Raleigh, N.C., by eight strokes.
Walton, Johnston sign with William Penn
Scott City graduates D.J. Walton and Matt Johnston have signed letters of intent to play basketball at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Walton, a 6-foot-2 forward, was a three-year letterman and two-year starter for the Rams. Walton was all-Scott Mississippi Conference his junior and senior years and second-team all-region both years. He led Scott City in scoring his senior season with 17 points a game and was second in rebounds with 7.0 per game.
Johnston, a 6-foot guard, is a 2002 graduate of Scott City. He played varsity his senior season and started several games.
Schwartz to play softball at Southwest Illinois CC
Recent Notre Dame graduate Stacy Schwartz has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Southwest Illinois Community College in Belleville, Ill.
Schwartz, a first baseman, was a four-year starter at Notre Dame with a .349 career batting average. An all-district and all-region selection, Schwartz averaged 20 RBIs a season.
Cape golfer sinks his first career hole in one
Gene Golden of Cape Girardeau shot his first hole in one Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Jaycees Golf Course.
Golden's 177-yard shot was off a 5-wood on hole No. 12. Witnesses were Joe Golden, Rob Ross and Mark Ballance.
Williams wins weekly Chip-A-Ways event
Linda Williams won Class A and Waunita VanDyke won Class B in the weekly Chip-A-Ways event.
Deanna Peterman and Jan Keefe tied for play of the day winners (throw out your worst hole), and Carolyn Blechle won for low putts.
